Garden Design Swanland, East Yorkshire, HU14

NEW 2012 PROJECT

The CAD Plan/Renders below show a garden design for a project I am currently working on for a young couple in Swanland, East Yorkshire. The property is about 4 years old and the rear garden is currently just turfed with some existing large Pine trees and Laurels along the rear boundary. My proposal for the couple (who have a butcher’s shop and like to entertain a lot outside) is build a large Indian Sandstone patio (with clay brick banding) to form the main entertaining area with a large timber pergola over which will house down-lighters. The rest of the garden will be re-graded and mainly laid to turf (with a timber edging) and the remaining areas planted with all-year-interest shrubs/trees and mulched with either pine bark mulch or golden gravel. Also included in the design is a “lean to” shed constructed from the same materials as the existing garage (black painted ship-lap timber).

Garden Design Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK

Garden Design In Leeds, West Yorkshire is available by Contacting established Garden Designer David Beasley (t/a a design and build company).

A former Leeds resident (Beeston, Meanwood, Chapel Allerton, Headingley and Pudsey), David has an intimate knowledge of the Leeds Area, local suppliers and Landscape Contractors.

David first moved to Leeds in 1998 and worked as Estimator And Designer in the Landscape Contracts Section of Groundwork Leeds where he worked alongside Landscape Architects on Projects up to £200k in value.

Working for Groundwork, David first met experienced Garden Builder, Clive Dearden who now trades under the name The Handmade Company and is primarily based in London but still retains a base in Leeds. Clive has been involved in numerous “High-end” Garden Design And Build Projects throughout West Yorkshire (up to £125k in value!) and is now David’s preferred Contractor to implement his Design Schemes nationally.

After Groundwork, David then went on to work as a Technical Assistant in the Parks Department of Bradford Metropolitan Borough Council (alongside Susan Rowley, Clive’s former Design Partner at The Handmade Garden Company and one-time assistant of world-famous Garden Photographer Jerry Harpur) where he Designed and Managed the Implementation of Landscaping Schemes in Parks and Open Spaces e.g. Feature Planting, Carpet Bedding, Conservation Works, Children’s Play Areas and BMX Facilities!

Whilst in Bradford, David studied 2D AutoCAD Design at night school and has since perfected it’s use and that of 3D Modeling computer programs and replaced his former “hand drawing” with an all digital “work-flow”.

Self-employed as a Garden Designer and Landscape Contractor since 2004, and now based an hours commute away from Leeds City Centre in Kingston Upon Hull, David has previously designed Private Domestic Gardens in Leeds and seeks Design Commissions from like-minded, forward-thinking Clients in Leeds and the West Yorkshire Metropolitan Area.

You may be reading this thinking “why should I employ an out of town designer rather than a local one?”. The answer on this occasion is; although Leeds is well-served with local Garden Designers, few (if any) are going to have the unique professional Landscape Architect trained background, “hands on” practical experience and expert 2D / 3D CAD Design And Visualisation skills that David has to offer!

Modern technology and Remote Internet Working allows modern designers a wealth of information at their fingertips and, as such, actual face-to-face meetings / Site Survey Visits can be kept to a minimum (or even not needed at all!) as is their associated time / travelling costs so that the designer can now offer an extremely affordable, cutting-edge service to Customers world-wide!

Builders In Hull, Beverley And East Yorkshire

Builders, House Builders, Property Developers and Construction Companies “of all shapes and sizes” are plentiful in Hull, Beverley and East Yorkshire in general.

Some may be Limited Companies employing dozens of people, some may be medium sized family-owned business, while others may be 2+1 bricklaying gangs or “one-man-bands” doing general building and “handy-man work”.

The fact the Construction Industry is pretty much un-regulated and anyone can call themselves “A Builder” means that Tradesmen that where originally time-served Joiners, Brick-layers, Electricians, Plumbers and Plasterers class themselves as a Builder and are willing to take on varying kinds of construction work on your behalf.

Externally, this can include building garden walls, laying paving, installing driveways, erecting fencing, constructing timber decks and even planting / pruning shrubs. In fact, the only task they tend to shy away from is laying turf / grass-seed which they will either completely ommit or worse get the cheapest quote possible from others to install.

Garden Constructed By David Beasley Including Timber Fencing, Sunken Trampoline and Turfing

Of course not all builders are like this and many call on the services of specialist Landscape Professionals to implement both the “Hard-landscaping” (i.e. Paving and Fencing) and “Soft-landscaping” (i.e. Turfing and Planting) resulting in more aesthetic, longer-lasting Landscaping.

If your “Builder” is going to carry out the Landscaping at your property as a continuation of the main building contract, you as The Client should question him on the following Horticultural / Construction details:

  • are they going to provide you with at least 450mm depth of good quality “loam” soil (in planting beds), where does it come from, does it conform to B.S. standards for fertility, is the ground to be de-compacted below, is the soil to be supplied “as-dug” (straight from the field) or “screened” (filtered at a re-cycling facility)?

when laying paving are they going to lay at least 100mm depth of well compacted hardcore over the excavated area, and are the pavers to be laid on a full 50mm deep bed of 5:1 bedding material rather than “spots”, are all joints to be fully pointed with 4:1 mortar mix rammed inbetween the pavers.

This Garden Was Designed By David Beasley And The "Hard" Landscaping Works Were Implemented By "The Builder" (Who Was Also The Client!). David Beasley Undertook The Turfing Works.

This Garden Was Designed By David Beasley And The "Hard" Landscaping Works Were Implemented By "The Builder" (Who Was Also The Client!). David Beasley Undertook The Turfing Works.

The above list of questions is by no means complete but represents good practice which is commonly either ignored by “Builders” or whose importance is not appreciated by them resulting in gardens that fail to flourish and paved areas that disintegrate due to frosty weather and heavy foot-traffic!

Professional Landscape Contactors and Garden Designers know the correct way to construct a gardens features because they have studied them at an Horticultural College and have been shown by their experienced peers working at established Landscaping Companies.

Of course, there are many advantages of using your Builder to implement the installation of your Garden Design on-site i.e. they are already on-site, you trust them, they know the site conditions, work and workmanship is continuous. Obviously, a Professional Garden Designer such as David Beasley would prefer / recommend that you used an Experienced Landscape Contractor to construct his Design Scheme’s “Hard-Landscaping” on-site. However, for the above advantages, Builders should be retained where possible and given guidance. “Soft Landscaping” work should definitely not be undertaken by Builders and should be given to experienced Landscape Contractors with suitable Horticultural Knowledge.

On top of the others already mentioned, the main dis-advantage of engaging your “Builder” to undertake your Landscaping work is the complete lack of DESIGN INPUT in to the Project.

Builders nominally elect to lay grey conctete “council flag” (or cheap “riven-effect” concrete) paving in a ring around your property with a “double row” to represent a “Patio” directly outside your “French Doors”, install “see-through” fences so that you can see in to all your neighbours gardens, grass areas (with drain covers in the middle!) right up to your boundary (so you have to strim the grass) or leave a “token” 600mm wide Plant Border that nothing grows in!

Typical Example Of What A House Builder Calls A Landscaped Garden!

Typical Example Of What A House Builder Calls A Landscaped Garden!

No thought is put in to the Garden Creation Process, they simply do what they have always done in the past and the result is that a Landscape Professional is brought in at a later date, the garden is completely re-done with new materials (the old ones are generally given away!) and you have the pleasure of paying for all the upheaval twice.

Garden Constructed By David Beasley Including Timber Decking, Raised Sleeper Beds, Reed Screening And A Water Feature

Garden Constructed By David Beasley Including Timber Decking, Raised Sleeper Beds, Reed Screening And A Water Feature

There is however a simple solution to avoiding all of the above disruption to your life and having the garden that you have all ways wanted constructed by your Builder and / or Landscape Contractors – COMMISSION A GARDEN DESIGNER during the Main Building Contract stage to Design and Project Manage the construction of your property’s “Outside Room”.

For 10% (average) cost of your Garden Build Cost (i.e. £500 on a £5,000 Build), David Beasley (t/a a design and build company) can Design your Garden with you and for an Additional Fee (charged on a per visit rate) Project Manage the Implemention on-site with the option of having detailed Specifications produced that details what materials are to be used and how they are to be installed.

Several Years into the "landscaping project", the Client had plans drawn up by an architect for a major re-model of the property including a large extension. David Beasley was appointed to help the Client Project Manage these works including tasks such as "setting out" the extension/retaining wall, appointing tradesmen, procuring materials and installing structural steelwork.

David Beasley was appointed to help the Client Project Manage these works including tasks such as "setting out" the extension/retaining wall, appointing tradesmen, procuring materials and installing structural steelwork.

The resultant Design Process will enable (amongst offer things) the production of “to-scale” 2D CAD Working Drawings with enough annotated information included that the Garden Builder can confidently construct the design on-site to the Clients wishes and 3D CAD Visualisation Images that enable discussion / understanding between the Designer, Client and Builder.

Not only will the finished garden be more aesthetic / functional it will also satisfy the Client’s “Needs” and “Wants” for their outside space and suit their “Personal Tastes” and Budget.

For clarification and to avoid confusion a design and build company no longer constructs the garden’s David Designs! David did construct Gardens up until 2012 with much success but has chosen to withdraw this Service to concentrate of his Garden Design And Visualisation Services.

The a design and build company name has remained however to simply reflect the fact that by appointing David to Design your garden, you are also getting access to all his previous “Build” knowledge, Sub-Contactors and Trade Material Suppliers. Priceless commodities that the average “Garden Designer” is not going to be able to offer you!

To further appreciate the many advantages of Commissioning David Beasley to Design / Project Manage your Garden / Landscape Project, please explore the wealth of information contained in the Pages at www.a-design-and-build.co.uk

Landscape Gardeners In Hull, Beverley And East Yorkshire

Landscape Gardeners In Hull, East Yorkshire And Beverley are plentiful!

Some are very experienced and skilled and others not so. Selecting a suitable landscape Contractor to implement the Garden Design Ideas you may have can be a very “hit-and-miss affair” and it is always wise to ask to see evidence of previous jobs either by visiting the site or viewing a Portfolio of photographs. Word-of-mouth recommendations is also a useful source of information on potential Contractors as is on-line testimonials  (although the contractor may have had some influence on their content).

Please do not be led to believe that Landscape Gardeners who are members of trade associations such as BALI or APL are any better than ones who aren’t, these tradesman (although initially vetted) simply pay an annual fee for membership of these bodies.

What the majority of these Contractors lack is a VERY important skill that ultimately decides if the finished suits your “needs” and “wants”, interior design style / personal tastes / architecture, budget and environment – namely GARDEN DESIGN SKILLS.

3D Visuals And "Mood Board" Prepared By David Beasley For Clients In East Yorkshire

Leaving a Landscape Contractor “free range” to landscape your garden without a definative plan in place is a very risky operation indeed. Firstly, the Contractor may be a very poor communicator and “stuck in their ways”, using materials/plants that simply don’t suit your property and may even be left over from their previous jobs.

You may come home from a day out to find that the Contractor has done something that you simply don’t want and you may end up paying twice for this work as it needs to be re-done.

Also, question a Landscape Contractor if they say on their promotional material that they offer a “Garden Design Service”, ask to see their completed drawings (how do they compare to the quality drawings/visuals you would expect from an Architect say) and quiz them on what Qualifications / Training they have specific to designing gardens.

In short, viewing many of the “Design Drawings” produced by Contractors, you will find that the majority are probably either eligible and “out of scale” or produced on amateur CAD programs (made mainly for the American market) which may well be “pretty” or “colourful” but in reality are almost useless and far, far inferior to a Design Drawing produced by a trained Garden Designer using industry standard software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp and Photoshop.

For the relatively small sum of 10% (average) of the Total Landscape Contract Costs (i.e. £500 on a £5,000 build cost) you could have your garden professionally designed avoiding all of the problems listed above.

Hull based Garden Designer David Beasley (t/a a design and build company) can do this for you (using “state of the art” industry standard CAD software) and give you the “extra peace of mind” that “he knows what he is talking about” regarding landscape gardening as he has actually worked as a landscape contractor for about seven years in total. Although David is now not offering a Landscaping Service through a design and build company, If needed he can recommend Landscape Contractors to you that he has worked with in the past and / or he knows are competent.

Interior Design In Hull, Beverley And East Yorkshire

If you have purchased / built a new home or need design ideas to spruce up the interior of your property, you may be looking to appoint an Interior Designer / Architect for the Project in hand.

An Interior Designer would meet with you at your property, present their Portfolio Of Completed Works and discuss your “needs” and “wants” for the aesthetics and functionality of the space.

They would take the architecture / proportions of the room in to consideration as well as your own personal tastes / existing furniture and produce a suitable scheme.

They would present their design in the form of a “mood Board” and show you samples of the materials they intend to use.

Some (not all) will provide you with hand / CAD drawn 2D visuals of the proposed scheme and possibly some Perspectives / Axonometrics (3D drawings) too.

Most Interior Designers tend to specialise in co-ordinating “soft furnishings” on your behalf i.e. curtains, furniture and carpets rather than planning internal structural building work and may or may not offer a Kitchen, Bathroom or Fitted Bedroom design service.

Interior Design Fees are usually charged out on an hourly basis (starting at around £35 per hour) or as a fixed fee per room.

Once you have stylised your properties interior, you may also want to “bring the outside in” (or vica-versa) and create a “flow” between your lounge/conservatory/kitchen and your “outside room” (i.e. your garden).

Hull Garden Design expert David Beasley of a design and build company is an experienced and talented Garden Designer (with vast experience of home renovation and decoration) and can help you achieve this “flow” by recommending paving/decking materials and layouts that achieve a “seamless” boundary between inside and out. He would also look at your interior design and furniture and suggest “exterior” equivalents to mirror these in the garden. Architectural indoor plants could be replicated outdoors using hardy (frost resistant) exotic looking specimens to emphasise the allusion of no physical barrier as could the use of identical lighting inside and out.

Advances in glass technolgy have made large picture windows very popular in new-builds and conversions, as has “bi-fold” door arrangements that make it possible to entirely open up rooms to the garden to allow fresh air in and facilitate parties etc.

With these advances it has never been as important to ensure that the “outside room” of the house looks good all-year-round and compliments the interior.

a design and build company can offer you a full Garden Design Service, implemented in much the same way as a typical Interior Designer (described above).

On top of this ALL of David’s designs are produced using the latest (state-of-the art) Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and enables him to produce full-colour 3D “artistic impressions” or “photo-realistic” montages to present to the Client.

Hull Garden Design specialist, David Beasley of a design and build company started his working life working alongside design professionals including Architects, Architectural Technicians, Interior Designers, Landscape Architects, Structural Engineers, Civil Engineers and Quantity Surveyors working for multi-disciplinary Chartered Architects Gelder And Kitchen LLP between 1988-1990 prior to going in to full-time higher education to study for his BTEC HND In Landscape And Horticultural Technology at Askham Bryan College, York.

Working at Gelder And Kitchen, David was taught how to produce technical drawings “the old fashioned way” (i.e. hand-drawn) and gained a valuable insight in to the workings of an Architectural Practice and the construction industry in general. He was also allowed to study for a BTEC National Certificate In Building Studies at Hull College on a day-release basis.

After passing his HND, David later on to work alongside Landscape Architects at Bedford Borough Council and Groundwork Leeds.

Having worked alongside design professionals and being professionally trained by them, David has adopted a similar method and attitude to carrying out his Residential / Commercial Landscape Design which is of great benefit to his Clients and makes him stand out from his competitors who do not have the advantage of coming from such a background.

a design and build company normally charges out it’s Garden design / 3D Visualisation services out at £20 per hour and (as landscape construction schemes are generally substantially cheaper to construct than buildings) percentage fees are generally 10% of construction costs.

If you are considering commissioning an Architectural Designer to design your house / property / building, please bear in mind that “external works” e.g. “hard landscaping” and “soft landscaping” will be out of their remit and they are unlikely to have the plant / horticultural knowledge to do your plot justice. Also, they will be charging you “Architects Fees” (i.e. £40 per hour) to design your “outside rooms”.

At the same time you are considering hiring an Architect to design your building / interior, you should also be looking at appointing a Landscape Design And Build specialist such as David Beasley to design your “external works”.

Commissioning a design and build company at the same time as your Architect (early in the process) will enable David to work alongside your Architect, emulating their design styles and materials in the landscape design, possibly utilising their CAD layout drawings (saving on surveying costs) and engaging with the chosen building contractor who could be retained to undertake the hard landscaping works on site.

As you can see, there are numerous advantages in working this way and all benefits be they time, continuity or financial will be passed on to you the Client so please seriously considering appointing a design and build company as your Landscaping Specialist at the earliest opportunity during the design process.

Garden Design And Build In London, The South East And Home Counties

London Garden Design Logo
London Garden Design Logo

London Garden Design is a working collaboration between established garden designer David Beasley (a design and build company) and experienced garden builder Clive Dearden (The Handmade Garden Company) who (with over 50 years combined experience in the industry)  have a goal of offering private domestic customers/commercial clients (in London, The South East and Home Counties) the best, most affordable Garden/Landscape Design And Build service on the market!

David (originally from Hull) met Clive (originally from Sheffield) in Leeds in 1998 and both worked in the Landscape Contracts Section of Groundwork Leeds. They have also collaborated on several previous Landscape Projects in the Yorkshire area.

Being a Garden Designer who embraces new technology, David is no longer confined to undertaking Design Commissions just in his own geographical area. Internet And Information Technology such as digital cameras/video, email, file sharing, Skype, SketchUp, Google Earth and Google Street View have empowered David with so much site specific information that site surveys are now very brief and information rich, accurate 3D models and drawings can quickly be produced for every Project he gets involved in which greatly benefits the Client and the Project in general.

Such is the quantity of information that is readily available to David, in theory, he does not even have to attend site to produce a model/design for a Client and he has proved this by producing 3D visuals for a garden design in Paris using minimal information provided by the Client.

If, as the Client, you really wish to meet with David at your site in London this is no problem as he is quite willing to travel down to meet with you using the excellent budget train or bus services between Hull and the capital.
